モーセがなかなかシナイ山から下りてこないのをみて、イスラエルの人々は不安になりました。彼らはアロンに見える形で頼れる「神」を作るように言いました。そしてアロンは人々から金を集め始めるのでした。。

金の子牛(Golden calf)
アロンにより作られた金の子牛の像が崇拝の対象となり、人々はすっかりモーセと神のことを忘れてしまい、祭りを初めていたのです。その最中にモーセは山を下りてきて、怒りのあまり手に持っていた石版を地面に叩きつけて破壊してしまうのです。
モーセによりこの金の子牛は焼かれ、細かく砕かれ、人に水と一緒に飲まされました。そしてモーセの味方となったレビ族の人々は金の子牛の偶像を礼拝していた人々３,０００人ほどを惨殺したのです。
この「金の子牛」ですが、一度ここで無くなりますが、イスラエルの後の歴史でまた登場することになります。そしてイスラエルの人々が神から離れてしまうきっかけとなるのです。。
幕屋と契約の箱(Tabernacle and the ark)
神から授かった石版を破壊してしまったので、モーセはまたシナイ山に登り、神と対談することになります。今度はモーセが石版に神のことばを書き記すのです。神はモーセに、これからの荒野での生活で大事なことを伝えました。特にイスラエルの人々と神とがどのように関わるかが「幕屋」を通して表されています。「幕屋」とは移動式の礼拝堂であり、特別な祭司がその中で神を礼拝することが許されていました。幕屋をどのように作るのか、その材料や中に置くものなども事細かく神に決められています。
神が作るように命じられた中で特に有名なのは「契約の箱」でしょう。幕屋の一番中央にあり、神の存在がある場所でもありました。幕屋の中には自然光が入れないようになっていたのですが、この契約の箱は常に発光していたので、中は明るかったと言われています。
この契約の箱はイスラエルにとって大切な宝として代々と引き継がれて行くことになるのです。戦いでイスラエルを勝利に導き、敵に奪われても神の力でイスラエルに戻ってきて、契約の箱はイスラエルの生活の中心にいつもいました。
契約の箱はどこに？(Where is the ark?)
イスラエル王国が何年も後に滅ぼされた際に契約の箱は他の宝と共に盗られてしまいました。そしてその後行方が分からなくなってしまっています。今もどこにあるか分からない状態です。一説では、契約の箱は遥か遠い日本まで来て、剣山に隠されていると言う話もあります。どこにあるかを考えているとロマンがあり楽しいですね！いつかまた発見されることを期待しています。
