The God of Israel had victory over the gods of Egypt including Pharaoh himself. The very next day, Pharaoh ordered them to leave Egypt immediately, and the people of Israel joyfully set out. They had very little time to prepare, so the people of Israel didn’t have time to cook bread. Therefore they needed to bake bread without yeast. The people of Israel took jewelry and gold and silver from the neighboring Egyptians, and set out on their journey.
Moses took the bones of Joseph, which has been with them for over 400 years, and lead the people out of the country. There was a pillar of cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night leading the way. It is the original navigation system!
Pursuit by the Egyptian army
Pharaoh had ordered the people of Israel to leave, but his mind soon changed, and he set out after them with a large army. He had already caught up with them at Pi Hahiroth.
The people of Israel had experienced much of God’s power, and even now there is a pillar of cloud an a pillar of fire leading them. You would think that they would rely on God in a time of trouble such as this, but instead they start complaining to Moses! “It would have been better to be a slave!” “Why didn’t you just leave us alone?” “Did you drag us out here to die in the desert?”
This, unfortunately, is not the last time the people of Israel will complain to Moses.
Moses divides the Sea
Moses told the people; “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today”. And we see the famous miracle where Moses “parts the sea”. Moses raised his staff, and the sea opened up, showing dry land. The people of Israel walked across the sea on dry land. The Egyptian army followed, but before they could cross, the sea water came back on them, and they were destroyed..
This is always a powerful scene in movies, and probably one of the top ten awesome miracles in the Bible. However, I think we have all wondered.. “Can that really happen??”.
Also it is not clear where this miracle occurred. Some translations say that it was at the “Red sea”, while other translations refer to the location as “sea of reeds”, so the miracle may not have happened at the Red sea.
An American software engineer Carl Drews analyzed this miracle to validate how it could have happened. According to his analysis, the miracle most likely happened near the Nile river delta, north of the Red sea. With the geography of that area, if there is a strong wind at 63 miles per hour constantly blowing, it is possible for the water to be pushed back to reveal dry land! It is a very interesting read, so I suggest you take a look at it as well.
The Egyptian army was completely destroyed, and the people of Israel were now completely free! They started to walk towards the “promised land”, the home land of their forefather Jacob.
